Meet Our Director

The Navajo Division of Public Safety is overseen by Executive Division Director Michael Henderson. Director Michael Henderson was appointed by President Dr. Buu Nygren and confirmed by Navajo Nation Council on July 23, 2025 as the Executive Director for the Division of Public Safety.

Director Henderson as a leader is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities. Director Henderson brings more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement and military service. Within the Navajo Police Department, he has served as a patrol officer, police sergeant, senior criminal investigator, supervisor of criminal investigations, police captain, and director of criminal investigations. He is also a retired First-Class Petty Officer of the U.S. Navy, having completed multiple tours during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Henderson holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Management and Administration from Walden University

With many years of experience in law enforcement, the Director has upheld a high standard of training, ethics, and accountability across all public safety organizations. Through collaboration with local agencies, stakeholders, and the public, the Director oversees programs and operations designed to prevent crime, respond effectively to emergencies, and promote a safe environment for all residents and visitors. Guided by integrity, accountability, and service, the Division Director is committed to building trust and maintaining the highest standards of public safety.

Director and Deputy Director of the Division ensure all seven departments (Navajo Emergency Medical Service, Navajo Fire & Rescue, Navajo Police Department, Navajo Department of Corrections, Navajo Department of Emergency Management, Navajo Criminal Investigators, and Navajo Internal Affairs) continue to collaborate, support, and foster open communication and partnerships with community members and organizations.

All department roles involve organizing outreach programs, community safety workshops, and public forums to address concerns and foster trust to protect and serve.
